Affordable Health Care as a Baby Boomer

Locating affordable health care as a Baby Boomer is not as easy as it used to be. Some employers have had to cut back on some of the health care for everyone because of the rising costs and working with a budget. Take this situation for example as told by a younger friend.

“It happened to me not that long ago at the company I work for when every employee’s health benefits were reduced. Out of the blue the company decided to change their health care provider because it was costing them too much.

They said it was necessary if all their employees were to have the same level of health care. Some people will argue of course, that my new insurance is still fantastic and I am fortunate to have it. The problem is that in an effort to find a less expensive insurance, having my husband and daughter on the policy is now costing twice the amount it did before. Without a pay increase, my paychecks are now much smaller just so that my family can have cover.

I liked the previous company and so far I am not as impressed with the new one although the health care plan doesn’t seem that bad. In my opinion, the company’s search for affordable health care not only left all of us with a significant cut in our paychecks, but higher co-pays and more out-of-pockets expenses from us. You see, four years ago, I gave birth to a little girl and of course my old insurance paid for the whole of my hospital stay. I sat and worked out the cost of this new plan and if I were to stay in hospital now and have a baby it would cost around 4,000 dollars out of my own pocket.

However, that amount is just for the hospital and delivery because I would also have other expenses and that just doesn’t seem fair to the majority that are involved. Affordable health care options are becoming more widely available because there is a desperate need for them. Those less fortunate can now get free health care more readily and workers without health care are able to join special schemes. Unfortunately, there are always a few that want to ruin it for the rest and this system is prone to misuse.

Perhaps some form of means testing is needed for people so that only genuine cases have the benefit of affordable health care. Taxpayers, such as me, are contributing to the vast number of programs currently available. My employer definitely found advantages in finding a lower cost health plan provider for their employees! Less take home pay was the result of my company’s health provider switch with many of its workforce the ones seeing less money to take home for their families. We have a responsibility here in America to providing some sort of affordable health care for those that need it most.”

As the Boomer generation starts to retire in larger and larger number the medicare system and so health insurance premiums will be put under greater and greater pressure. Check with your insurer now to make sure you are adequately covered.
