Its inevitable. Like it or not, no matter how much we exercise and try to maintain our fitness the aging process means that joint pain has a fair chance of affecting all of us. Joint pain, otherwise known as arthralgia is not pleasant and can hit us in a number of ways as the years roll by.
Joint pain can stem from a number of conditions including;
Arthritis. This can be osteoathritis or rhumatiod arthritis.
Aseptic Necrosis. This is a condition in which poor blood supply to an area of bone leads to bone death. it can also be called osteonecrosis.
Bursitis. This is the inflammation of one or more bursae. With hundreds of them throughout the body they provide this surface for all motion, making movement normally painless. When bursitis takes hold, however, movement that relies on the inflamed bursa becomes rough and painful. Movement of tendons and muscles over the inflamed bursa causes it to become more inflamed, perpetuating the problem.
Osteochondritis Dissecans. This is when blood supply to the area at the end of your bone is cut off. Most people diagnosed with this are older children, teenagers and young adults, particularly those active in sports. So this may have been affecting boomers for years already.
Sickle Cell Disease. Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. Sickle-shaped cells can block the smaller blood vessels so less blood can reach that part of the body. This means that eventually tissue that does not receive a normal blood flow becomes damaged.
Other causes of joint Pain may include;
- cartilage tears
- fractured bones
- sprains
and even tendinitis.
Although it may be inevitable joint and back pain, it can be held at bay if you don’t over extend yourself when playing sport. Also just approaching everyday activities with common sense and don’t try to overdo it. Don’t think of yourself as a 25 year old just to prove a point and end up with an injury as a result.
