Baby Boomers and Fitness

Boomers - Stay Fit!

If your like most of us, a busy work schedule and busy family life its easy to let yourself slip up and ignore No. 1, especially your own health.

When we were all younger we could party till dawn and not feel the worse for it. Well at least we were able bounce back and then face the day in a more productive manner than is the case these days. Well the party animal days are over for most of us baby boomers.

Lets face it if you use the recognized stats we were born between 1946 and 1964. That puts some of us over 60, so if you don’t want t be pushing up daisies anytime soon its now time to get off our collective bums and aim at turn the clock back to be that 35 year old again.

So what are some tips to help us baby boomers become fit and enjoy our retirement or semi-retirement in the years ahead. My grandfather had a saying - Take care of your stomach for the first 50 years and it will take care of you for the next 50 years. The thing is its never too late to start taking care of yourself. So to start. Stop feeling that its all to hard, be more positive and take action to do the things that we always have known to start leading that healthy life. By just doing more in two key areas we can all be feeling better within the week.

Diet. Find some fruit that you enjoy and eat more of it, go for 5 serves a day, and same applies to vegetables. Go for the lean cuts of meat and combine them with vegies, especially the green ones like broccoli. Look for foods high in fibre. It doesn’t take a lot especially these days when there is so much information available, especially on the internet. Guys, once you know a few basic combinations its easy, and you will probably find you are not as hungry after cutting out the high sugar foods and avoiding those carb snacks. Do this and everything inside will start functioning a whole lot better.

But that is only half the story as you know.

Exercise. To ensure a healthy body and mind its essential to combine diet with exercise. That doesn’t mean you have to try and be 20 again. Take a measured approach, but get that blood pumping. An aerobic exercise like a brisk walk is a perfect form of exercise. Take the dog and you will have a new best friend again. If the dog is to fast then jump on a bike and get going. Try and do some aerobic exercise for at least 20 minutes and build it up to an hour or so a day. Swimming is great as well, and if you like the social aspect of things jion a club and get into some tennis, racquetball or badminton.

One final point. To keep that muscle mass and make sure you you don’t fade away, do a few weights as well. So do it! Take action and stay healthy guys.
