Baby Boomer Or A Cusper?

Although a few months old I find that this article has hit the nail on the head when it comes to re-defining the popular generational names. I was born in 1960 and although fitting into the ‘Baby Boomer’ generation can’t really say I feel like those boomers who are already retired or about to do so. Even my twitter name … Ima60sBoomer represents this! I am so glad someone has articulated this ‘feeling’.

Marian Salzman who has been credited with coining the term “metrosexuality,” has now invented a new sub-generation: “Cuspers” — basically people too young to be baby-boomers, and too old to be gen-Xers. The Boomers are no longer in charge…………the mantle has now passed to the so-called ‘cuspers’ with the US President Obama represents them, leading the way ahead.

The Baby Boomers are being blamed for the woes in the world at the moment. The selfish generation, the generation that pursued pleasure, proclaimed “I can have it all” and refused to grow old — “50 is the new 30,” etc.

And from under that mantle the ‘cuspers’ now have even more reasons to stake out their own separate identity and values.

Its a great read ….. for the whole article click here.

Interesting blog you’ve got here. Congrats. Like you, I was also born into the generation between the Boomers and Xers, and relate strongly to it. This generation has finally got a name which has caught on in a big way, but it’s not “cuspers”! (Cuspers is a term which is used to describe those in between any two generations. It’s most often used these days to describe those between GenX and GenY. While Saltzman isn’t the first to use the term for those between Boomers and Xers, she is virtually the only expert who uses that term this way. Take a look on Google and you’ll see this is true.)

By contrast, The term “Generation Jones” has developed a big national (and international) following as a moniker for our long lost generation between Boom & X. Google Generation Jones, and you’ll see it’s gotten a ton of media attention, and many top commentators from many top publications and networks (Washington Post, Time magazine, NBC, Newsweek, ABC, etc.) now specifically use this term.

Here is an op-ed about GenJones as the new generation of leadership in USA TODAY:
