Yes.. I can’t agree more!

This applies to all things though, not just trick-or-treat. So often these days kids are behaving so badly, and more and more violently. Are they to blame, sure. But does the fault reside totally with the children - absolutely not. Parents are there to parent but everywhere I look these days that seems to be the case less and less.

Parents should teach trick-or-treat manners…..

Halloween is almost here! That billion dollar industry which, to many Americans, signals the beginning of the holiday season. This writing, however, isn’t about Halloween profits, but of Halloween contrasts.
As a baby boomer on the West End of Auburn, I can remember Halloween nights when the procession of kids in my neighborhood was non-stop from 6 p.m. until 10.  I, of course, was one of those kids and instilled in me was a sense of respect and courtesy shown at every door we knocked on and every bell we rang. “Trick or Treat” was immediately followed by a hearty “Thank You!”
In later years, happily married and returned to the West End, I noticed a very profound change in the Halloween ambiance. Throngs of baby boomers were now replaced by a mere trickle of young people with a very clear absence of discipline and respect.  The few ghosts and goblins that appeared at our door, thrust out their bags and stood motionless and silent as if to say “Hey, you owe me!” No “Trick or Treat”  no “Thank You!” and no corrective action by the parents. It was all over by 7 p.m.  I guess video games and a distinct lack of parenting had tainted what I considered a night not unlike Christmas.
